At Hand Therapy New York our patient-centered, 1:1 individualized therapy sessions are provided by a certified hand therapist (CHT) skilled in manual therapy, splint fabrication, range-of-motion and strength training, and wound and scar management. A key component to care is continuous communication and collaboration with both patients and physicians from evaluation to completion of therapy.
Tammy Abdan, OTR/L, CHT, has been a practicing occupational therapist specializing in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation for over 15 years. She graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy.
Tammy has comprehensive experience clinically, in both in-and-out patient hospital environments, as well as private practice settings. She specializes in treating a vast array of upper extremity diagnoses both conservatively and post-operatively, and is proficient in fabricating static and dynamic splints.
Tammy remains current with the latest developments in treatment techniques and new research findings by attending continuing education conferences and by reading professional publications.
In order to provide the highest quality in patient care, Tammy maintains close contact and open communication with surgeons and M.D.s, working together to create a custom tailored plan of care for each patient.
A CHT, or Certified Hand Therapist, is a therapist who has earned a specialized certification by completing over 4,000 hours of upper-extremity treatment and passing a rigorous certification exam.
Being treated by a CHT assures patients of his or her therapist's advanced level of competency and professionalism, and extensive knowledge of intricate anatomy. In addition, a CHT has a mastery of the complexity of upper extremity surgeries and their treatment protocols.
In addition, in order to maintain certification, a CHT is required to pursue continuing education in order to keep abreast of current therapy practices. For more information regarding CHTs, visit HTCC.org.
